Fertility and eating disorders

A healthy and balanced lifestyle contributes, besides other positive effect, also to fertility. Some medical studies note a bigger incidence of problems related to eating disorders with fertility, especially in case of underweight or anorexic women. The fat decrease causes hypothalamic dysfunction that can lead to irregularity of menstrual cycle or amenorrhea (absence of menstruation).

In other cases of overweight and obesity there is an increase of anovulation, excess fat alters the metabolism of oocytes, worsening their quality, and there may be also an increase of spontaneous abortions.

Women with polycystic ovaries have often overweight problems and hyperinsulinemia. With the increasing production of male hormones consequently there is a decrease in fertility.

It is therefore important to focused on these disorders globally (physically and psychologically) with the support of specialists in IVF, nutrition and endocrinology.
