Ovarian reserve and female fertility

Ovarian reserve indicates the number of follicles in the ovaries and it decreases with increasing age of the woman, even when is used contraceptive pills.

A lower value of ovarian reserve means lower chances of natural pregnancy. However, this value indicates only the quantity but not the quality of the oocytes. Genetic and environmental factors such as cigarette smoking can also affect the ovarian reserve.

The blood markers that give an estimate of the fertility status are: anti-mullerian hormone and TSH hormone (between the third and fifth day of the menstrual cycle), it is also important  the numver of the antral follicles decetcted by ultrasound.

There are currently no cures to improve the ovarian reserve, therefore a medical evaluation is important in case of difficulties in natural conception and if the value is low or zero orientated towards treatments of assisted reproduction.
